The Research Project

In 2004 the first concept of Edirom software, developed by Ralf Schnieders, made all relevant sources for the edition accessible to the user within the immediate context of the edition. This first prototype produced with Macromedia Director in fact brought quick first results, but at the same time inherently called into question the cost of long-term usability owing to Macromedia Director’s reliance on a proprietary programing environment.

In 2005 application was made to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) for a specialist grant to enable development of appropriate long-term portable solutions in a suitable framework taking into consideration the largest possible range of various editorial issues.

The project for "development of tools for digital forms of scholarly music editions," sponsored since the beginning of 2006 by the DFG, has ever since been an attempt to work out the requisites for durable and platform-independent digital music-edition standards. Central to this are new forms of historico-critical editions, each of whose specific problems will be considered in close cooperation with existing and recently started complete editions and philological edition projects.

The tools developed are thus conceptualized as open-source tools for representing the results of editorial work, as well as also modularly constructed editorial tools that permit an efficient application of new technologies in music philology – if nothing else than to reach a better application of scholarly findings in musical praxis.

Key questions for conception and development in Edirom Project can be identified as:

  • What demands do editors make on an applicable edition software?
  • What formats and structures can ensure lasting durability to the created digital editions and how can these be made utilizable for electronic editions?
  • What technical and ergonomic obstacles are to be overcome?
  • How might the questions posed in a critical edition in one medium be altered when the medium is changed, such as, for example, in an arrangement or in transcriptions?
