Edirom Tools

The tools can be divided into three groups, each consisting of two programs. Edirom Editor and Edirom Server form the basis of the editorial options that are needed to work on the contents. The second group consists of the most recent version of Edirom Viewer and the Edirom Updater enabling the manual creation or expansion of editions. Edirom Online offers the most current updated options and obtains its contents from Edirom Publisher.

Edirom Viewer and Edirom Updater

Edirom Viewer displays digital music editions. Besides the viewing of music text, here in the foreground are presented the individual annotations in the music texts and the correlation of all data relevant to the edition (music texts, source descriptions, letters, and much more).

Ordinarily, editions are normally distributed together with the software on a CD or DVD such as was realized earlier on in several edition projects, as, for example, in the Reger Edition of the Works, the Carl-Maria-von-Weber Complete Edition, or the OPERA Project.

With the help of Edirom Editor, editors have the possibility of constructing a structural basis for an edition in Edirom Viewer. Edirom Updater is then used where the limitations of Edirom Editor currently still prevent a more refined structure of the edition. Fine-tuning of the data of an edition can be carried out in a cyclical workflow, the changes being conveyed by way of Edirom Updater into either a new or an existing Edirom Viewer.

Edirom Editor and Edirom Server

The program Edirom Editor used for the creation of digital music editions represents the counterpart to Edirom Viewer. Here the placing of the bar positions – which are the current basis for most of the functions of Edirom Viewer – can be performed on the images of the music pages with the aid of a graphical tool. Also, essential components of this program are the correlation of individual music texts, for example, in association with works, or the graphically supported creation of individual annotations.

A distributed and likewise simultaneous work on edition materials is to be made possible within the framework of Edirom Server. The materials used concurrently in the edition projects by multiple collaborators as well as the results constructed upon it are to be administered and made available centrally. Within Edirom Editor it will be possible to work on both local data as well as on multiple different Edirom Servers. Edirom Server is currently still in an internal test phase and will soon be published.

Edirom Online and Edirom Publisher

The combination of Edirom Publisher and Edirom Online offers the option of providing digital editions on the Internet so that they can be read and/or used in the browser without additional installation expense. This permits the improvement of new channels of distribution on the one hand, but on the other, ensures at the same time that changes and additions to the edition and updating of the software remain feasibly simpler. Moreover, links to other projects or creation of contents in the browser are again more easily possible.

The individual elements of these software components are used the same way in the new version of Edirom Viewer, which means that at this point even the maintenance costs can be minimized.
