"Digital Editing between Experiment and Standardization"
From 6 – 8 December, 2007, the "Edirom"-project will be hosting a conference under the title "Digital Editing between Experiment and Standardization". The meeting will be taking place at the Heinz-Nixdorf-Museums Forum (HNF) in Paderborn. Besides lectures given by international speakers there will be workshops dealing with different areas of digital editing.
The conference will consist of three sections:
- Concepts of digital edtions
- Data formats for written music
- Problems of encoding letters, diaries etc.
The first section is not intended to treat tech-specs but should encourage a discussion of methods and necessities for critical musicological editions. Lectures will be given by people from diverse disciplines: computer sciences, media sciences, German language and literature studies and musicology.
As a side-effect we hope to get an analysis of editiorial methods to the present day and a debate about future perspectives and needs.
With MusicXML and MEI two different standards have emerged as data formats for written music while they are still not well known in the editorial field. In the second section these formats (and possibly some others, especially the Humdrum-tools for analysis) will be discussed within the scope of editorial premises.
The third section will on the one hand deal with TEI-variants for encoding diaries and letters, on the other hand present possibilities of electronic handling of such text-corpora will be surveyed. We hope to have a thorough discussion about the needs for adequate tools and a homogenous concept of encoding.
A series of workshops dealing with problems of encoding music or special genres of texts as well as introductions to TEI shall round off the programme of this conference.
